The Portsmouth Mediation Service (PMS) is keen to provide training and development opportunities to other individuals and organisations." Registered as a Training Centre with the Open College Network, the PMS has an excellent satisfaction rating from participants in its Mediator courses.

Skills taught are useful in all people to people dealings but are particularly valuable in the workplace and between businesses and their customers, including complaints functions.

Training in Mediation and Mediation Skills offered by the PMS includes:

  • full Accredited Mediator course at Open College Network (OCN) Level 3.
  • Skills Used in Mediation course (to be registered with the OCN at Level 2).
  • courses and programmes designed to meet specific requests and needs. (Not part of an external accreditation process).

Accredited Mediator Training

This is a course leading to a nationally recognised qualification (OCN Level 3) as accredited Mediator.

The Course involves six days of attendance and also the completion of an Evidence File to a satisfactory level. To demonstrate competence, individuals should also undertake actual Mediation Cases. [See Section on "Volunteering with the PMS"].

A Course Prospectus is available on request to the PMS Office.

Training in Skills Used in Mediation

This Course is especially useful for “front-line” staff and those dealing with customer services and complaints, as well as to supervisors / managers and to all individuals generally.

The specialist "listening" and "reflecting" skills used in Mediation lend themselves well to ensuring that individuals feel that they have been "heard" and "understood". This can assist in improving communication and promoting the finding of mutually acceptable ways forward.

Mediation skills also favour problem solving and ways of resolving matters by identifying the actual needs and wishes of people, this also being particularly useful when dealing with complaints or similar dissatisfactions.

Training to Meeting Specific Requirements

The PMS is prepared to deliver Mediation Skills' related training to meet the specific requirements of organisations. Such training may be delivered at the organisation's own venue or at the PMS Office.
